Good trouble

Trump suggested today that the election should be delayed because of the potential for mail fraud. Of course, he can say whatever he wants — he doesn’t have the autority to change the date. I think he was mostly trying to divert attention away from the funeral of John Lewis, and he succeeded in that. I guess from his perspective, no publicity is bad publicity.

There has been a ray of sunshine in the darkness of the last few weeks. Although the death of John Lewis has been sad, this has given America an opportunity to reflect on what statesmanship looks like. There have been ceremonies in several significant locations. Today’s funeral in Atlanta was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church, a historically significant church that has been home to much of the civil rights movement. Speakers included three former presidents: Obama (“someday. . . John Lewis will be a founding father of that fuller, fairer, better Aerica.”), Goerge W. Bush (Lewis insisted that “hate and fear had to be answered with lova and hop”), and Clinton (“He got into a lot of good trouble along the way, but let’s not forget, he also developed an uncanny ability to heal throubled waters.”) Other speakers included Nancy Pilosi and a number of family members and civil rights leaders.
